The Lacock Cup

The Lacock Cup is a secular silver cup believed to be from medieval times. It is believed it was donated to St Cyriac’s Church possibly by the Baynard family from Lackham. Following the reformation the church would have needed a larger communion cup. (Previously only the priest would have taken the wine) The cup become so valuable it became very difficult to insure for use and in the 1960s it was put on permanent loan to the British Museum for preservation and safe keeping. In 2009 the cup was sold to the British Museum who had expressed an interest in buying it. The museum made a replica of the cup for church use – see picture below.
